Gabriel Vaughan presents Prendergast's detailed account of the vice that accompanied the growing pains of a burgeoning Denver, Colorado, at the beginning of the twentieth century. A young district attorney, Philip Van Cise, emerges as the crime fighter of the day. Vaughan narrates with consistency; his steady voice guides the historic narrative of Van Cise as he stamps out a wave of vice that ranges from con artists reminiscent of THE STING to the more evil forces of the KKK. Vaughan's tone remains comfortable throughout; he keeps emotions in check, never imitating anyone except for one outstanding part in which he describes a rally whose audience contains a heckler. Vaughan's solid and even-keeled narration works well with Prendergast's topic and writing. M.B. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2023]
