Andrews tells the story of an unlikely love affair between a German soldier stranded in the U.S. during WWII and a young widow struggling to move beyond the loss of her husband. Andrews himself is a character in this historical novel, set on an island along the Gulf Coast. He lends his own perspective to the events as they unfold, as well as his gentle, relaxed drawl. Andrews's pacing is superb; he gives locals of the town distinct and likable personalities that fit both his character descriptions and their actions. While this is not great literature, Andrews's reading and the general amiability of the town and its people make for a welcome escape.
