With her well-modulated voice, Jessica Mitford traces the history of women's experiences in childbirth from medieval Europe to contemporary America. Her clear, crisp narration remains well-paced and calm even when recounting horrendous treatments and actions. Although she does use some British pronunciations and idioms--they are neither problematic nor distracting. This is a solid, professional delivery by an author who appreciates the seriousness of her subject. Brief musical transitions separate the sections.
