Originally published in 1948, The Franchise Affair, set in the English villages of Milford and Larborough, is both a mystery and a love story. Robert Blair, a lawyer, represents Marion Sharpe and her mother who are accused of kidnapping a young girl and keeping her prisoner. Edward Petherbridge, with his proper British and Scottish accents, reads with a careful, measured pace which is well-matched to the tone of Josephine Tey’s novel. His female characters are especially convincing. Skillfully abridged, the production catches all the charm and character of the original. A.A.B. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: MAR 93]
