Lyle Blaker evokes midtwentieth century Appalachia in this short story collection by national treasure Wendell Berry. Each story revolves around a resident of the fictional town of Port William, Kentucky. In one, a young man falls in love right before he's sent off to die in a war overseas. In another, we follow a man and his beloved hunting dog through the years of the dog's life. Blaker makes these snapshots of the characters feel alive in a new way. His delivery of the dialogue creates a unique voice for each character, and his narration of the landscape's descriptions makes listeners feel like they are right there in the story.
