Two families, one mortal, one immortal, blend their members in business, love and murder. As Barker’s complicated plot unfolds, layer upon layer of richly textured detail enhances the appeal. One mark of a great narrator is complete transparency, and this Paul Hecht achieves completely. Through his engagement and subtle, believable characterizations, the listener hears the book, not the performance.
