Narrator Stina Nielsen's soft tones are a gentle respite from this complex, sometimes vicious, murder mystery set in Sweden. The second case for Detectives Charlotte von Klint and Per Berg begins with a bomb in a public square, followed by a series of robberies, then a drowned woman in the river, then another and another, all seemingly disconnected--but are they? Throughout, Nielsen uses uninflected American English for descriptions, narrative, and dialogue, with Swedish names and places effortlessly pronounced. Syrian characters are voiced without an accent. As clues pile up, von Klint and Berg question whether the bomber is also responsible for the woman in the river, or is he another victim in the case? Perhaps something more nefarious is going on.
