David Timson performs in the character of author Bernard Mandeville as he is revealed in this early-eighteenth-century satirical discourse on economics and morality. In his engaging performance, Timson explicates and clarifies the text, making it easier to absorb while also enlivening it. Subsequent dialogues between a Mandeville proponent, narrated by Justin Avoth, and a younger critic, Will Kirk, are examples of perfect casting. Stephanie Racine's part is very brief. Avoth's voice--especially rich and resonant--amply personifies the older, more thoughtful Cleomanes; Kirk's the younger, more excitable Horatio. Their performances are energetic and expressive, if occasionally a touch quick. All the performances are flawlessly clear and correct. All in all, the listener interested in Mandeville's provocative work is given an embarrassment of riches. W.M. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2025]
