Considered by many to be a romantic comedy classic, Crusie's wry, witty story tells of three intersecting characters: Nina Askew, a newly divorced 40-year-old editor; Alex Moore, the young ER doctor who lives downstairs; and Fred, the depressed dog who brings them together. The novel is given a note-perfect reading by Susan Ericksen. Giving these characters distinct voices was likely a challenge; there are no accents to play with, and everyone's dialogue is snappy. The supporting characters stand out more--particularly the bored attendant at the pound, Nina's stuffy ex-husband, and her sassy elderly upstairs neighbor. Also worthy of note: the upbeat, jazzy score that begins and ends each disc sets the mood beautifully. C.E.W. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/ JUL 06]
