Author Cornelia Funke narrates an introduction that reviews the previous books in this complex multi-world fantasy series. Then narrator Allan Corduner takes over, expertly delivering Funke's dark storytelling style. Corduner's deep and emotive voice conveys the dread of Dustfinger, the Fire-Dancer, and his companions as they maneuver to thwart the plans of Orpheus, a vengeful, silver-tongued character from Dustfinger's past who is trying to imprison Dustfinger's loved ones in a book of shadow magic. Corduner speaks with an English accent but uses a Scottish-sounding dialect to differentiate Dustfinger. Many other characters, however, sound similar despite the author's descriptions of the entrancing voice of Orpheus, the high-pitched voices of glass men, and the youthfulness of some companions.
