The lives of three teenagers intersect in an English town during the summer. The first is a bright young girl working as a waitress. The second is a bullied 14-year-old. The third is a refugee from Afghanistan. Lurking behind them is prejudice and the dark, hidden world of a rapist. All the characters intersect is a frightening series of events. Gibbons' writing moves from character to character, perspective to perspective in a way that works well in audio. This is due to the able narration of Jerome Pride. He gives each character a consistent vocal personality so that listeners can easily differentiate them. He is particularly good at capturing English accents.
