One of the masterpieces of modernist American fiction, this may be a book that is better listened to than read. The intellectually challenged mind of Benjy Compson, voiced here by Golden Voice Edoardo Ballerini, is more easily entered via the ears than the eyes, and Bronson Pinchot's portrayal of Benjy's brother, the thoroughly reprehensible Jason Compson, is the nightmare he should be. Shaun Taylor-Corbett as Quentin and Robin Miles, delivering the only section that is not in first-person stream of consciousness, are also quite fine. Much of the novel rewards the kind of detailed study that can only be done on the page, but this audio version provides a matchless experience. D.M.H.
