Henrietta Meire's upbeat delivery is strangely suited to this moody Victorian mystery. Dr. Julia Lewis is a crusader for women's rights at a time when women weren't accepted in traditionally male professions. Mary Allingham, a "lady painter," tells Julia that law enforcement has dismissed as unimportant the recent break-ins at her art studio, which she shares with other women. In addition, many of their models have disappeared. Sensing that something sinister is going on, Julia and Scotland Yard's Detective Richard Tennant investigate. While the subject matter is dark, Meire's bright, cheerful attitude makes the period language and diction sound just right. She creates a feisty Julia and a concerned Richard, and provides depth to secondary characters. Meire offers entertaining listening for fans of Victorian mysteries.
