Dyer masterfully voices the two sides of Joe: one, a seemingly kind, intellectually disabled man; the other, a calculating, twisted killer. Interspersed are third-person chapters from the perspective of Sally, a misguided but well-intentioned co-worker who is obsessed with Joe. When Joe discovers a copycat killer, he becomes determined to track them down. Dyer skillfully differentiates male and female characters. The descriptions of the Christchurch settings enhance the chilling atmosphere. The result is a disturbing yet engrossing listen that will keep listeners hooked from start to finish.
