Award-winning Icelandic actor lafur Darri lafsson is a wonderful choice for the voice of this novel about contemporary Icelandic farmers. He speaks as Orri, the son of a cattle farmer and a Lithuanian Jewish university professor, who over the course of the novel comes to a deeper understanding of his parents and their lives. The narrator is, of course, impeccable with Icelandic words and place names, which are thickly scattered throughout the story, and his warm, almost-Americanaccented voice evokes the emotions of a young man who is not used to expressing them. Orri's life and situation are not romanticized, but his choices do become understandable despite the difficulties and downright unpleasantness of the life he eventually chooses to adopt.
