Elaine Pagels, renowned scholar of Christian history, is no stranger to the Gospels, those that are canonical, as well as the more obscure versions she calls "secret." However, deciphering the meaning behind those differing accounts of Jesus's life results in an often dense text. Eunice Wong's clear, well-paced, and straightforward performance works hard to make this material accessible in the audiobook format, and her insertions of the many New Testament citations is masterful. Christianity, the world's most widespread religion, is the backdrop for the wonder of "showing how a young man from a rural background suddenly became a lightning rod for divine power." Wong's understated delivery brings these stories to the forefront. Still, this fascinating, complex narrative may be an easier read with our eyes.
