Kelly Marie Tran is an excellent choice of narrator for a novel that follows four Vietnamese American cousins whose lives are drastically altered when a wave of violence leads to their community's internment. While Ursula and Alvin remain free, Jen and Duncan are sent to a detention camp, where they struggle with isolation and the harsh conditions. When Jen secretly finds a way to communicate with the outside world, Ursula sees an opportunity to expose what's going on. Tran's narration captures the characters' shifting emotions--fear, resilience, and moral conflict--as they navigate an unsettling reality. Her performance differentiates perspectives while maintaining the story's tense mood, making for a gripping listening experience that highlights both personal stakes and broader social themes.
