Ian McKellen’s inscrutable voice unwraps this second Stone Age adventure of Torak and his wolf brother, chronicling Torak’s journey to the Seal Clan and battle with a power-hungry mage. The complex interactions of religious rituals and natural phenomena are made accessible and appealing because of McKellen’s clean phrasing and articulation and his abilities as a storyteller. Using only verbal inflections and pitch changes, McKellen manages to animate an entire cast of characters, turning a challenging read into an action-packed, edge-of-your-seat listening experience. While SPIRIT WALKER can be enjoyed as a stand-alone recording, it’s best experienced as a follow-up to WOLF BROTHER, the first title in the series.
