Jaunty music, heavy on bassoon, begins this audiobook, as narrator Fabian Cook, Jr., welcomes listeners to Kittybunkport, Maine, a coastal town populated entirely by scaredy-cats. When the town's lighthouse goes dark, Chowder, full of false bravado, and Crackers, openly timorous, are volunteered to take their lobster boat out to investigate. Narrators Sean Kenin Elias-Reyes and Nathan Nonhof dig into the silliness, creating a counterpoint of bluster and fear. Mercifully, neither one attempts a downeast accent, landing instead in the vicinity of Boston. Listeners who enjoy the story alongside Zachariah OHora's illustrations will giggle at such fillips as a sky full of "super scary lobster ghosts" and a boat out of Bark Harbor that is adorned with floppy hound dog ears. Good-natured foolishness. V.S. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: JUNE 2025]
