Saskia Maarleveld skillfully narrates this well-researched historical account. Italy surrendered to the Allies in 1943, and Nazi Germany quickly invaded. Many brave Italian women, hiding in plain sight, secretly delivered messages, weapons, and food to Resistance fighters. The biography focuses on four brave Italian women whose subversive activities included hiding bombs in laundry baskets, assassinations, and leading rebels over treacherous mountains. Although Maarleveld's pleasant, well-paced narration delivers the material clearly, the audiobook has short chapters and abundant historical details. It may have been better served with a different narrator for each woman's story. Nevertheless, this is a fascinating listen about women who achieved great contributions during a dramatic period in history. N.M.C. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2025]
