Set in a small island community off the coast of Iceland, this audiobook immediately captures the attention of listeners. A death at a diplomatic dinner sets the stage for all that follows. Denica Fairman depicts a wide range of characters, but the majority of the story is told from the perspective of Jane Shearer, the wife of the Canadian ambassador to Iceland. After the murder, the story shifts to the past several times with a different character focus each time. Fairman creates believable distinctions between the characters, but the many time-shifts can occasionally make listeners feel lost. Ultimately, the unveiling of community secrets--and the unexpected connections among many of the characters--lead to a surprising and satisfying conclusion.
