Rachel F. Hirsch gives a stellar performance of this poignant coming-of-age novel. After high school, Hannah and her girlfriend, Sam, drive from Long Beach, New York, to San Francisco, dreaming of a queer life outside the confines of their small town. Working as strippers to make ends meet, they grow apart, and Hannah learns there's more to growing up than moving away. Hirsch's narration captures all the contours of being alone and afraid yet excited in a new city. Her voicing of Hannah's beloved Bubbe is full of warmth and humor. She conveys the intensity of first love and heartbreak in a voice that often cracks during moments of heightened emotion. This novel is a beautiful love letter to queer San Francisco of the 1990s.
