King Henry is desperate for a male heir from at least one of his six wives who are ensconced in castles throughout his kingdom. The relationship between Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour is the main focus. In alternating chapters, Dowd draws distinctions between the two women. Dowd plays Boleyn as confident from the start, determined to make herself the favorite queen, uncompromising in showing her intellect and political savvy. In contrast, Dowd depicts Seymour as a reluctant pawn who is furthering the ambitions of others.
