David Potter has written a straight-ahead biography of Julius Caesar with a coda about his posthumous influence, and Graham Winton gives a correspondingly straight-ahead performance of both. His voice is pleasantly serviceable, and he generally conveys meaning accurately in his tone, emphasis, and phrasing. Overall, he delivers the sense of the text in a way that's congenial and likable. He avoids any showiness but inhabits the narration with an amiable energy. Occasionally, some of Potter's assertions and conclusions and some of Winton's emphases and pronunciations are slightly questionable--more the French than the Latin. Winton's performance should keep listeners engaged with the complex life of one of history's most influential men. W.M. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2025]
