Gwen and her three younger siblings inherit their family home on a sparsely inhabited island after their mother and grandparents die. Narrator Charlie Sanderson creates credible character voices for independent and strong-willed Gwen and her family--petulant Roger, twins Hester and Hazel, and their ineffective but sincere stepfather, Henry. When Esme Laverne is hired to watch the children, Gwen correctly suspects there's something sinister behind her forced sweetness, which Sanderson renders in a cloying falsetto. Soon, a terrible mold begins to envelop the house, and the children's nightmares haunt them. Sanderson's pace quickens as they fight both their fears and the evil affliction in the house.
