Narrator Eunice Wong infuses her delivery with empathy and a sense of dread as PBS correspondent Sandra dies while covering a conference on the violence in Nepal. She enters the bardo, the afterlife of Tibetan Buddhism. There, filled with guilt and anxiety over having died, she tries to save her talented autistic son, Trip, from a ruthless kidnapper. Wong slows to a deliberate pace as Sandra takes over the bodies of others in order to save Trip. Wong's perfect pacing and faultless emphasis bring Trip to life, and she adds an edge to her depiction of Sandra, reflecting her high anxiety and frustration. Trip's situation is dire, but there are also moments of levity, compassion, and awkwardness, all handled well by Wong. R.O. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2025]
