Three early stories by Virginia Woolf are rich in phrases and imagery. Narrator Amy Scanlon lets Woolf's legendary way with words and syntax shine. While the sentences meander as broadly as the scenes they construct, diction is front and center throughout the audiobook. Scanlon's performance suggests a similar affection for the written word. Her energetic delivery fairly caresses the word choices and dances with the chains of phrases. The informative afterword is an excellent addition for all. While the audiobook may be ideal for some listeners, others may feel stuck in the complicated prose. Those who allow Woolf's syntax to flow forth will find that Scanlon ably guides them through her iconoclastic works. L.B.F. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2025]
