In this ninth volume of the Tier One thriller series, narrator Ray Porter succeeds first and foremost by not getting run over by the propulsive narrative. Unsurprisingly, this production is wall-to-wall action. Yet during the rare quiet moments, Porter's nuances make listeners care about the characters: the members of the black-ops team Task Force Ember, a new POTUS, even a fresh SEAL. It's the self-doubts of the stone-faced warriors that Porter especially brings to life, eliciting listeners' empathy. He is subtle in his use of accented English by the Chinese characters who are the opposition in this covert clash of global superpowers. Porter deftly controls the pace of this energetic thriller.
