A BIOGRAPHY OF A MOUNTAIN The Making and Meaning of Mount Rushmore

by | Read by Scott Merriman

History • 12.25 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2025

Mount Rushmore is an awe-inspiring site, and the story behind it is nearly as monumental. Author Matthew Davis chronicles the history of the project, paying particular attention to its impact on and relationship with the people who lived there for centuries. He adds bits of trivia, such as the fact Thomas Jefferson isn't in his planned location because an overeager worker used too much dynamite at the original position. Scott Merriman offers a smooth, easy-to-follow narration. He makes the text come alive and inhabits the work so thoroughly that listeners will be forgiven for thinking he's the author. Merriman matches the tone of the text, especially in the sections dealing with the Indigenous people of the region. R.C.G. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2025]
