Narrators Hollis McCarthy and Pete Cross form an unlikely duo in this fantasy set in 1920s Carmel-by-the-Sea. Grieving Fayette Wynne heads to Carmel, bringing along her family's healing sourdough starter, which failed to save her late mother. In the middle of a storm she saves Hollywood star Rex Hallstrom from near death. The two find refuge in a sentient house that seems to have an affinity for them. Ultimately, the new friends must save the house from a deadly witch who is determined to take it over. McCarthy manifests Fayette in an Arkansas drawl and Rex with heartfelt tenderness, while Cross brings out the childlike innocence of the magical house. The narrators' portrayals of the chosen family embodied by these characters will charm listeners. A.A.H. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2025]
