Skilled narrator Clare Corbett delivers an in-depth study of frenemies Sookie, a total narcissist, and Ruth, her former classmate--and a woman no one should have as a confidante. The writing is clever, and the literary style urbane. The listener needs to pay close attention to the nuanced dialogue and the malicious asides that convey the true nature of Ruth, snake in the grass that she is. Corbett's crisp, polished voice suits the tone and rich timbre of these educated English Gen Xers. The plot develops slowly, and most of the story involves sorting out the women's competing attitudes, past recollections, jealousies, admiration, and resentments. Listeners who prefer likable characters may be disappointed. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2025]
