Galileo had a daughter? Who knew? L.A. Theatre Works and playwright Jessica Dickey offer a fascinating glimpse of the renowned astronomer's world in this full-cast production. Galileo, who was condemned by the Church for his theory that the Earth revolves around the sun, is played with gentle ease by Gregory Harrison. His daughter, Maria Celeste, played with intelligent innocence by Ginnifer Goodwin, loyally helped continue his research and correspondence from the safety of a Tuscan convent. The emotional core of the play often centers around "the Writer," played by Dickey, who travels to present-day Florence to research Maria Celeste's life. In Florence, the Writer discovers as much about herself as she does about the female aspects of early scientific discovery. B.P. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2025]
