THE LIGHT A CANDLE SOCIETY

Narrator Mark Elstob embodies the idiosyncrasies of George McGlory, a widower of a certain age in Bedford, England. Visiting his wife's grave, George notices a lonely "council funeral" attended by no mourners. Inspired, George works with a local florist along with a reporter, undertaker, council member, and fellow librarian to shine a light on the forgotten deceased. Elstob portrays George as genteel, his voice reflecting quiet courtesy as he strives to relate to his daughter and a younger, female colleague. Elstob's voices for society members, some of which stray into caricatures, range from the florist's Eastern European accent to the undertaker's local dialect. David Bowie fans may bristle at Elstob's pronunciation of the singer's name. Elstob spotlights humanity and remembrance in his moving narration. [Published: JANUARY 2026]
