Dunai Gurira sets a jaunty pace--from the moment Chico experiences his first bath to the moment of scary shadows from the prickly pear tree and the excitement of a neighborhood gathering in honor of his birthday. The voice of Mama Jumbo is warm and loving while Chico's is high pitched and impressionable. A lilting tone flavors this fine African tale, and a peek at Daly's illustrations would be a treat.
