Rarely do a book and its audio counterpart merge as spectacularly as they do in Hour of the Hunter. It could have been a difficult story to follow because of its many characters, plots and subplots. However, due to Engene's ability to handle nuances, the listener is not once confused. The story is a mix of Native-American lore and tradition, as well as glimpses at academia, prison life, abusive households and police procedure. Engene speaks the native names and tongues beautifully. The tension between the hunter and the hunted remains terrifying until the last second. S.G.B.
