The difference between human beings, artificial intelligence beings, and enhanced intelligence beings becomes a bit blurry at a time in the future when biomechanical enhancements are routine, up to a point. The retirement of Samantha (Sam), a biomech researcher, is totally disrupted when she gets drawn into a web woven by Charon, who is experimenting with such enhancements in extreme ways. Hillary Huber integrates a healthy dose of skepticism in her characterization of Sam, giving her a quality that is fitting for a scientist. As Sam becomes drawn in by Turner, who was created by Charon, Huber moves the character along a spectrum of emotions that are sometimes raw but always under tight control.
