JOURNEY TO SHILOH

Seven West Texas boys heading east to join Lee in Richmond are dragooned into General Johnston's army on its way to Shiloh, a battle more deadly than all previous battles in the country's history combined. Mark Hammer reads this evocative tale using an innocent, soft-spoken, self-effacing voice to reflect the characters and times. His quietly expressive reading gives life to the boys' frontier honesty and love of friends and adventure. He is equally successful at capturing the horror and senselessness of the common soldier's lot. The story is a gem. Hammer's warm narration gives it a timeless luster and leaves the listener with a lingering pathos for the casualties, both in and out of uniform, of all wars.
