A lovesick youth and his eccentric uncle descend into the bowels of our planet in a story that influenced numerous subsequent writings, notably Edgar Rice Burrows's Pelucidor series. Penguin bills this title as a "children's classic," doing it a disservice. Jules Verne wrote adventure and science fiction for a popular audience of kids and adults. Fortunately, narrator Glover treats the material on its own merits--which are considerable. Here are all the thrills, chills and humor of the original, delightfully presented by an artist who has fun with his text and shares it generously with the listener.
