LUCIA'S PROGRESS

E.F. Benson created a masterpiece which has been perfectly translated to modern television and now audiocassette. Each format brings a new and additional dimension to the Mapp and Lucia Series. This wonderful work is enhanced by Prunella Scales’s presentation. Early twentieth-century England, its mores and class struggles, both social and personal, are all vividly brought to life. Scales portrays both men and women with equal grace. The main characters are instantly recognizable as they exchange slights, slurs and maudlin compliments. The content and delivery are laugh-out-loud funny, with the narrator outdoing herself on the idiosyncrasies and specially cultivated foreign accents of many of the English characters. S.G.B.
