Only a few moments into this audiobook the listener feels compelled to draw closer to the fire in Mariana’s cottage as the storm raging outside is reflected within her. She awaits news of her husband’s fate aboard a British naval vessel in the nascent months of WWII. Asher’s warm, expressive British lilt wonderfully captures personalities and moods of the eccentric characters in Mary’s life. Asher is Mary as she reminisces about her childhood, first love, disasters at school, friends, family and, finally, her husband. Through Asher’s skill in delivering British, French and American dialects and accents, the listener comes to know the characters well and is left wanting more.
