Listening to stories that profile 14 tough-minded Outback women is bound to make listeners' lives seem cushy. Journalist Sue Williams selected her contemporary subjects with diversity in mind—the group ranges from a traditional Aboriginal woman, Mitjili, to feisty Molly, who lived in the middle of the Simpson Desert for two decades without a phone. But their common traits quickly become clear. These are brave women with a sense of humor and humility, tough minds and courageous hearts, who are self-reliant yet service-oriented. Narrator Catherine Milte does a terrific job of bringing each of their individual personalities to life while highlighting commonalities. Her vocal talent shines especially bright in the book's extensive quoted material. Milte's reading transforms already-absorbing stories into a thoroughly engrossing production. J.C.G.
