In a style reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird, the narrator looks back upon an incident in which his father, the sheriff, reluctantly apprehended his own brother, the town doctor, for the rape and murder of a Native American girl. Bridges's voice and personality ideally suit this prize-winning novel, which he delivers with drama and resonance.
