This trio of stories from The Jungle Book forms a self-contained narrative of wolf-child Mowgli's adventures. Kipling's intricate, elegant prose requires careful listening, but Jeffrey's reading--including the potentially static descriptive passages--is dramatic, full of well-placed pauses balanced by cascades of words. Jeffrey also gives distinctive voices to Kipling's non-human characters--from the slow deliberate tones of Baloo, the sleepy brown bear, to the sibilant lisp of Kaa, the rock python. Well-planned break points at the end of each side sustain interest. A second volume with the remaining four stories would be welcome. K.T.B. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG 93]
