POWER IN THE BLOOD: LAND, MEMORY AND A SOUTHERN FAMILY

Mays, a native of Louisiana who now lives in Toronto, returned to his native soil in 1990 to bury his Aunt Vandalia. While going through her effects, he was prompted to trace his family's journey from Jamestown to Louisiana. Mays reads this abridgment of his discovery of who he is with a soft, almost genteel, voice. Conscious effort has trained him to suppress his Southern accent, yet the listener is treated to this accent coming out not only in its slight lilt, but in certain expressions.
