RED CAP

by | Read by Johnny Heller

Young Adult • 4.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1991

The grim reality of war is vividly recalled in this well-researched and well-written work of fiction. Redcap is the nick-name of a boy named Ransom Powell. He is from western Maryland and relates to us his service in a Virginia (later, West Virginia) Unionist regiment. Captured in early 1864, he survives the notorious Andersonville prison. Heller's reading is excellent. At first, his voice may seem a bit too mature for this work. However, he convincingly portrays the coming of age of a boy who must all too early become a man. Especially compelling are Ransom's recollections of Andersonville prison. M.T.F. © AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine [Published: OCT/NOV 00]
