This huge, fictionalized biography of Sacajawea, the Shoshone woman who led the Lewis and Clark expedition to the Pacific, focuses on the cultural variety she encountered moving from community to community--Native American, white and mixed--during her life. Waldo inserts "reader's notes" citing other accounts of Sacajawea's life and comments on her choices when she fills gaps in the historical record. Kate Reading gives a straightforward reading appropriate for the text whose strength lies in its descriptions of Native American and frontier life, not in characterizations or plotting.
