Matilda Gillespie's death could be a suicide--or a murder. A generational history of child abuse is revealed in Matilda's diaries. Walters provides a great deal of insight into the characters and their possible motives. Then, with an abrupt twist, she reveals them in an entirely new light. Williams is particularly sensitive to the characters' human strengths and weaknesses and portrays them effectively.
