The kidnapping and murder of a young girl and the discovery of a bar of stolen silver (a silver pig) lead private informer Marcus Didius Falco on a journey through the Roman Empire. It is the equal of any contemporary, hard-boiled adventure. Donnelly's accent seems a bit out of character, but his clear well-paced reading lends the proper touch of erudition to the story. He uses slight changes of inflection to differentiate among characters, generally using a high-pitched, wavering voice for the female characters. British pronunciations are occasionally distracting. Perfectly packaged for library circulation, Silver Pigs is the first in a series that proves the streets of classical Rome are as mean as any today.
