MORAL LANDSCAPE

The divide between science and morality is the subject of this cogent book by a neuroscientist/philosopher known for his arguments against the validity of religion. With dense but lucid writing, he says science can discover truths when it comes to questions of individual well-being and misery and societal good and evil. While controversial positions like Harris's draw strong reactions and his often-lurid examples do little to contradict his reputation as a provocateur, he skillfully reminds us that scientific clarity about morality is possible because, like religion, it requires belief, consensus, and a desire for truth. The pacing and tone of the author’s reading sound clipped, but his voice conveys enough warmth and emotional congruency to make his ideas unfold in an uncluttered and appealing manner.
