YOUNG FREDLE

When a young “house mouse” named Fredle gorges on a peppermint pattie, his adventures begin—adventures that bring him into a world of predators, unexpected friends, and expanding knowledge. Wendy Carter deftly brings Voigt’s animal world to life. Her characters are distinctive; especially memorable are the unassuming but determined hero, who marvels at the wonders of nature; the stereotypical gang of rowdy raccoons; the slightly dull dog; and the ominous snake. Carter slows and lightens her voice to emphasize the story’s special moments, such as Fredle’s amazement at the many stars in the night canopy.
